Long walking days with a full load or travelers wanting a multi-year pack
Why we recommend it
Pick the MATEIN if you want the lowest possible price and a shoe pocket; the Osprey, Peak Design and Tortuga cost many times more and justify it mainly through comfort and durability.

Why it is our Best Value
Students on a budget, first-time one-bag travelers and anyone who wants to try backpack travel before spending real money are the people the MATEIN carry-on backpack serves. It also works as a second bag for families, a gym-to-airport bag for weekend trips and a cheap option to leave at a relative's house.
It holds the Best Value slot because the feature count is absurd for the price. You get a 40L expandable main compartment that opens wide, a padded laptop section, a separate shoe compartment, mesh organizer pockets and a USB charging pass-through for a power bank you supply. The straps are padded and there is a luggage sleeve to slide over a suitcase handle. None of this is best in class, but all of it exists, and that is the point for shoppers who typed best travel backpack under $50 into Google.
On a weekend trip, it behaves like a well-organized duffel on your back. Shoes go in the bottom pocket, clothes in the main section, laptop in its own sleeve for the TSA bin, and the expansion zipper opens on the way home. For a two or three night trip it is plenty, and if it gets damaged you have lost very little.
The honest drawback is comfort under load. This MATEIN carry-on backpack has no real hip belt and the back panel is thin, so a full 40L gets uncomfortable after a long walk, especially for smaller travelers. Zippers and stitching are also where cost savings show up over time. If you plan to walk cities for hours with everything on your back, or you want a pack to last years, skip it and buy the Osprey. For light, occasional trips where price matters most, nothing here competes.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what travelers ask most about matein carry-on expandable.
Is the MATEIN 40L backpack airline approved as a carry-on?
Unexpanded, it is designed to meet common US carry-on dimensions, and it can often pass as a personal item on larger jets when packed light. Expanded, it may exceed limits. Check the Amazon listing dimensions against your airline before relying on it.
How long does the MATEIN carry-on backpack last?
For occasional trips it holds up for years; the zippers and strap stitching are the parts to watch under heavy use. Treat it as a light-duty bag, avoid overloading it and it will outlast its price. Check the Amazon listing for any warranty details.
Does the USB port on the MATEIN backpack charge my phone?
The port is a pass-through cable only. You need to put your own power bank inside the bag and plug it into the internal end, then connect your phone outside. No battery is included; check the Amazon listing for the current cable type.
